Teeth are always shifting and moving throughout our lives…
Even if you’ve never had orthodontic treatment. Teeth have the ability to reposition themselves as we age. In order to prevent your teeth from shifting after orthodontic treatment, custom made retainers are provided to all patients at no extra cost.

There are two main types of retainers that we offer our orthodontic patients:

Fixed Permanent retainers behind the front teeth.

Vacuum Formed Retainers (Clear removable retainers)

Fixed lingual retainers are fitted for all patients undergoing orthodontic correction with braces or clear aligners. The Hawley retainer or Vacuum formed retainers are removable retainers only worn at night during sleep hours.

What are Permanent Wire Retainers?

Permanent Wire retainers or Fixed Lingual retainers are the best way to keep your teeth straight after orthodontic treatment. A custom made wire is created from a 3D scan of your teeth so it fits flush behund your front 6 teeth. At the end of treatment this is attached behind the front teeth with a tooth coloured filling material. It is shaped to be both smooth and comfortable.

After this it’s just like having a filling in your mouth! You forget it’s there after the first week while the retainer continues to hold your front teeth in the perfect position. These retainers last many many years. Every time you have a check up and clean your dentist will be able to let you know if there need to be any touch-ups.

Why are Clear Removable Retainers important?

Custom-made vacuum formed retainers (clear reatiners) are designed to hold the position of all the teeth in your mouth. They also maintain the shape of your arch (the shape of your smile!) Each patient will receive a set of upper and lower removable retainers at the end of treatment.

The clear removable retainers are to be worn at night or while you’re asleep. These retainers are made in our in-house lab by our clinical team so we can get them to you sooner rather than later!

FAQs

Why do I need retainers?
Teeth are always shifting and moving throughout our lifetime – even if you’ve never had orthodontic treatment! Teeth have the ability to reposition themselves as we age. In order to prevent your teeth from shifting after orthodontic treatment, custom made retainers are provided to all patients at no extra cost.
What happens if I don’t wear my retainers?
If you don’t wear your retainers for a period of time, your teeth may relapse: shift back towards their original position.
How are Fixed lingual retainers made?
Fixed lingual retainers are custom made by taking a digital scan of the top and bottom teeth. The scan is then sent to out specialised orthodontic lab. Here a skilled technician creates a wire that is shaped to fit perfectly behind your front six teeth. The wire is then sent to our practice where we will cement it onto your teeth with a tooth coloured filling material.
How long do the clear retainers last?

The removable vacuum formed (clear) retainers usally last about three or more years if treated with care. They should not come into contact with hot water or harsh chemicals such as mouthwash or vinegar. When not in use, please place them in the retainer case provided to all patients.
